Description of a variety of dogwood Semyon
Dogwood is a rather rare plant with tasty and healthy fruits. Depending on the variety, it can grow both as a shrub and as a tree. The article describes the variety Semyon, which is characterized by late ripening and high productivity.
The plant is heat-loving, so in vivo it can be grown in sunny regions - in the Caucasus, Kuban, Central Asia, Southern Europe, southern Ukraine. Hothouse reproduction can be established anywhere in the country, but this will require enormous costs and will not bring a crop similar to that grown in open ground.
Did you know? For many centuries, residents of the Black Sea steppes made strong bows and weaved baskets from strong and elastic branches of dogwood.
The variety was selected in 1985 in Kiev, where seedlings from the Crimea got. Since then, this tall tree (up to 5 m) for its appearance has earned popularity and is quite common in summer cottages and gardens.
Given the resistance of the seed to drought, its root system is well developed. This allows you to capture the minimum amount of moisture and nutrients from the soil. Southern soils are usually poor in minerals and macrocells, so the plant has to adapt to its habitat, forming strong roots.
Important! The largest number of roots is located at a distance of 1-2.5 m from the trunk. Therefore, you need to water the tree not only under the trunk, but also under the entire crown.
The roots are not very deep - up to 120 cm of the main root. But horizontal processes diverge from it, which extend under the entire projection of the crown of the tree.
A tree of this variety has ovoid, pointed, light green leaves. They contain about 14% of tannides - (astringents) tanning agents, so they are popular in folk medicine for blood clotting and as an antibacterial agent. Foliage on a tree may not fall after the first frost and will not even lose its usual color.
Berries have such a description - they are oval (or even pear-shaped) fruits with a slight ribbing. They are quite large in the Semen variety - weighing 6-7 g and measuring up to 29 mm along the long side of the oval. Glossy dark cherry drupes have a pleasant aroma, sweet and sour taste and ripen in the first half of September. The dense pulp easily gets off the bone, and the berries themselves firmly hold on the stalks.
This late variety of dogwood delights summer residents with fruits until late autumn. Even the first frosts will not always force the plant to shed berries. But, of course, to remove them from the branches is much earlier.

It is best to plant this variety in the fall with ready-made seedlings that will take root before winter and will spring into growth. Soil should be selected neutral or slightly alkaline. Given the size of an adult plant, planting is carried out according to a 4 × 4 meter scheme. The first fruits should be expected for 3-4 years, and by the age of 15 the tree can please with a harvest of up to 45 kg of berries.
Important! When choosing a seedling, you need to pay attention to the integrity of the branches and roots, as well as the proportionality of the plant.
Preparation and landing are as follows:
- In the evening, you need to prepare a pit of 0.8 meters in diameter and of the same depth. Add a bucket of organic fertilizers - humus or chicken droppings, and pour 2-3 buckets of water.
- Soak the roots of the seedling for half an hour in a light solution of potassium permanganate.
- Place the seedling in a pit, gently spread the roots and sprinkle with soil.
- Tamp the surface of the soil and pour 2-3 buckets of water.
After landing care
After the plant takes root, care for it consists of the following operations:
- top dressing;
- preparation for winter.
Watering the cornel Semen, given its productivity, you need to weekly. Watering is carried out with 2-3 buckets of water not only in the ram hole, but also over the entire territory under the crown projection. If heavy rains have passed, you can take a break in irrigation, since waterlogged soil leads to acidification or even rotting of the branched root system.
You can check the need for watering when the earth dries after rain after this: to scoop up a little soil a meter from the trunk and see how deep it becomes wet. If the soil is moist at a level of about 5-7 cm, then you can carry out moderate watering (1-1.5 buckets) and leave the plant alone for a week.
Feeding is carried out according to this scheme:
- superphosphate is introduced in the spring - one handful under the plant;
- during fruit setting potassium sulfate is used - 100-200 grams depending on the size of the tree;
- Before wintering, the plant can be fed a humus bucket.
Pruning is done once a year as the crown thickens. The branches growing inside the plant are removed, and the stiffened shoots are cut to a third of the length. Sanitary pruning is also possible when diseased parts of a tree are cut off or foliage with parasites is removed.
Of course, dogwood in general and the Semyon variety in particular are not susceptible to diseases and insect attacks, but isolated cases are found.
Did you know? Dogwood has even traveled to space - it is used to make nutritious paste against scurvy for astronauts.
The preparation of the Semyon variety for winter is to protect plants from lovers of feasting on bark - mice, rats, ground squirrels, hares, etc. Lime whitewashing is a long-standing method of rodent control. But in our time, the benefits of this method of protection are disputed by summer residents, since lime can harm the plant. Many abandoned it and wrapped it with agrofabric, coniferous spruce branches, dry shoots of roses, raspberries, and hawthorn.
The dogwood variety Semyon is very attractive for growing in summer cottages and farms. This unpretentious plant has a number of good properties - drought tolerant, patient with cold and gives a good harvest.
